Fire Risk Assessors - Competency

Amendments to the Fire Safety Order require that the Responsible Person should arrange for fire risk assessments to be undertaken by competent persons only. A competent person is further defined as ‘where the person has sufficient training and experience or knowledge and other qualities to enable the person properly to assist in making or reviewing the assessment’.

Currently there is nothing to stop anyone setting themselves up as a fire risk assessor. In order to address this gap the Code of practice BS 8674 Built Environment - Framework for competence of individual fire risk assessors is currently at the public consultation stage and should be implemented in 2025. It is based on the Fire Sector Federations code of practice and sets out three tiers of competencies and require regulated qualifications for assessors. Competent assessors information will then be available on a public register.

Prior to implementation of this code of practice please get in touch for recommendations on approved assessors or look on the IFE website for registered assessors.
