Metal Working Fluids

Metal working fluids (MWF) can cause dermatitis, occupational asthma and occupational hypersensitivity pneumonitis from skin contact or the inhalation of mist.

Risks to health increase as the composition of MWF deteriorates in-use becoming contaminated by tramp oil, soluble metals, metal fines and microorganisms.

Exposure to skin contact and mists should be reduced to 'as low as reasonably possible' by the use of LEV, automated mixing devices, suitable tools and as a last resort PPE.

Where there is a likelihood of disease occurring in the workplace a suitable health surveillance programme should be put in place through consultation with a competent occupational health provider to cover both skin and lung disease.

Health records should be kept for 40 years.  Further guidance issued in collaboration with the use and UKLA can be found here.
