Why do fire doors matter?
Fire doors help stop fire and smoke from spreading, protecting lives and giving people peime to escape. But not all doors labelled as fire doors meet safety standards
Certified Doors
A certified fire door comes as a set which is the leaf and frame, a certified door will be installed by a competent person in accordance with guidance included in the certification documents.
Certified fire doors have undergone rigorous testing and comply with current regulations. These will have a certificate number and a serial number for traceability.
Nominal Fire Doors
A nominal fire door is a door that appears to meet fire door standards, but has not been officially tested or certified.
Typical Features:
Solid timber construction
Correct thickness (usually 44mm for FD30)
Fitted with intumescent seals and fire-rated hinges
No certification label or plug

Notional Fire Doors
A notional fire door is a door that’s assumed to offer some level of fire resistance but:
Has no certification, OR
Was once certified but has been altered or damaged
Examples:
Missing intumescent seals
Incorrect hinges or closers
Cut-down or modified
No evidence of testing or rating
Key Point:
⚠️ It’s based on assumption or past use, not on up-to-date compliance.
