Sun Awareness
12th-18th May is sun awareness week, the campaign organised by the British Association of Dermatologists serves as a reminder of the dangers of overexposure to the sun and what steps can be taken to protect ourselves and our workers.
Following research by the HSE which identified construction workers as an 'at risk' group for skin cancer it is now recommended that construction workers and those that predominately work outside should wear sun screen all year round. Some more sun-smart tips are to always;
Use SPF 30+ - apply generously and reapply every 2 hours.
Seek shade - especially between 11am and 3pm when UV rays are strongest.
Cover up - wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and protective clothing.
Wear sunglasses - your eyes need protection too.
The NHS advises regular inspection of the skin to monitor any changes, using a mirror or asking a friend or partner to check areas that aren't easily visible.
