Vehicle Movements

The segregation of people and vehicles can be overlooked with a reliance placed on drivers and pedestrians themselves to ensure suitable separation.

A Yorkshire recycling company has been fined £1.2 million recently due to a worker being struck by a skip wagon, he was not wearing high viz and the driver of the skip wagon was concentrating on manoeuvring the vehicle around some low level skips rather than on his surroundings.

HSE found that the site had not been suitably organised to allow vehicles and pedestrians to circulate in a safe manner.

A combination of training, high visibility clothing, barriers, designated walkways and loading/unloading areas are all simple measures that can be implemented to ensure a happier, safer workplace.
